Milan Railway Station

Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) held that in art one can observe society’s dominant values. This is especially so in architecture - it is a very-public and expensive “art” form.  I passed  thru’  Milan Railway Station recently. Like NY’s Grand Central, it is a very strong and particular statement. If it were a steel & glass box what different values could one read into it? NY’s Penn Station was a “Grand Central” style building -  but was replaced by a 1960’s non-descript steel & glass box. In Dublin, Guinness are currently extending their brewery ….with large blank steel boxes…a far cry from the built legacy earlier Guinness’s left to Dublin - what does that say?!
