Don't judge art from photographs…..

I once took issue with a piece I read  on "motorway art" in which the "black sphere with road markings" sculpture outside Naas was said to reflect  movement; I had just read Harold Speed (1924) who said the sphere and the circle were the most static of forms! When I went to look at the Naas globe I found there was indeed a sense of motion implied …not in itself, but in the siteing of the sphere: on a gentle slope - it seemed to be just ready to roll down the hill! After that I thought never make judgements of art pieces on photographic evidence alone!

The same may be true of painting – the handling of the paint is only visible in when in front of  the actual picture – and can have a big influence on the quality of the work, according to American realist painter, Will Nathans.
